What is EC261?

Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 is a European Union law that protects air passengers in the event of denied boarding, flight cancellation or long delay. It applies to all flights departing from an EU airport, and to flights arriving in the EU operated by an EU carrier.

Depending on the flight distance and the length of the disruption, you may be entitled to between €250 and €600 per passenger — regardless of the ticket price.

Your rights at a glance

The regulation guarantees a set of rights whenever your flight is significantly disrupted.

Financial compensation

€250 to €600 per passenger for delays of 3 hours or more at arrival, cancellations and denied boarding.

Right to care

Meals, refreshments, communication and — where necessary — hotel accommodation while you wait.

Refund or re-routing

If your flight is cancelled you can choose between a full refund and an alternative flight to your destination.

Right to information

Airlines must inform you of your rights at the airport when disruptions occur.
